Growing up With Video Games in the Philippines
Nostalgia.
When I was a kid I owned a NES. Growing up in the Philippines was funny. I remember I had a neighbor who was really good at Super Mario Bros. He got invited into houses just so that he could show you how to finish the game. Man, everybody knew that kid. Other kids even gave him toys in return for info on how to beat the game. Mothers eventually got sick of him eating all their foods and threw him out.
I later learned from a friend that he changed his style and got invited into houses again by showing them how to change levels and get a hundred lives by kicking turtles.
Those turtles had weird head shapes. Now that I think of it Bald Bull must be a descendant of those turtles.
In school videogame know how was supremacy. Kids who owned more games were cool but kids who knew the codes and can finish those games were Gods.
A day won’t past by that we don’t chant the contra code Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, *Select, Start (Select, Select, Start for two players).
Detention usually consisted of video game discussions like can you finish Double Dragon 3 without the cheat? It later evolved to Street Fighter discussions.
Every kid in school knew Street Fighter. I remember someone said that the key to understanding all the people in the world lies in one accepted language. Well in school every boy had one language and that was Street Fighter.
Every kid boasted that he finished the game. I for one boasted I can beat any character using Ken. I use E.Honda for weaker foes hehe. That soon changed when I met Glen. But that’s another story.
EGM’s and Gamepro’s circulated in school and were often confiscated. Much to the chagrin of owners.
Those days were unforgettable. Guys looked like they belonged to a secret society when they were actually just discussing some codes. Most of us usually traded games and usually see each other during weekends to play together.
This culture eventually changed during the arrival of the internet.
We no longer bought gaming mags because all you need was In Gamefaqs.
We no longer had gaming discussions. We have Gaming related boards for that.
We no longer had other kids coming over to play. We have Online.
All you needed was at the click of your fingertips.
All of this was really making me sad when suddenly Andrew came up to me…
“Why so down?”
“I miss the old days” “I hate the internet”
“Rocky! Are you forgetting all the good things the internet gave us?”
“WHAAAAT? SPAM, POPUPS, VIRUS, and SPYWARE” “Opening your e-mail only to find out that you have a shitload of porn..”
“Here let me show you a Youtube”
After this article Rocky claims he now loves the internet especially Youtube.
